Combining an important product and a strong brand.

Enfamil® Lipil® infant formula.

In the late 1980s, scientific evidence was mounting that long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) are important in the development of retinal and neural tissues in infants. Our Mead Johnson Nutritionals subsidiary began evaluating the most promising LCPUFA technologies, looking for a partner. We identified and approached Martek Biosciences, our best candidate by far, with strong science, an excellent management team, and extensive intellectual property.

Martek and Mead Johnson were anxious to ensure that all formula-fed infants worldwide would have the benefits of LCPUFA, through a worldwide non-exclusive license. We created a competitive advantage with a superior clinical development program and the global power of the Enfamil® brand. Enfamil A+ is marketed in more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, while Enfamil® Lipil® is the first product of its type on the U.S. market. These new products are showing real market strength and promise.
