Facility Information
HOPEWELL, NEW JERSEY
WORLDWIDE MEDICINES
Facts and Figures

- Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS) is a leading diversified worldwide
health and personal care company with a mission to extend and enhance
human life by providing the highest-quality health and personal care
products. The acquisition of the former Mobil Technical Center in Hopewell
represents a strategic investment by BMS to continue the discovery and
development of new health care products and expand information management
technology. The decision to acquire the Hopewell Facility also aligns
with BMS' commitment to sustainable development.
- Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs
of the present without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs. BMS' plan for smart growth of the Hopewell
Facility embraces this definition by combining rehabilitation of a dormant
facility with a holistic approach to future development that promises
more efficient resource use.
- The 433-acre campus offers 1,000,000 square feet of laboratories,
office space, and computing facilities, with opportunities to expand
in the future.
- Bristol-Myers Squibb Company acquired the research, data, and administrative
center in Hopewell Township, New Jersey, in 1997.
Economic Development
Local charitable contributions
Bristol-Myers
Squibb has provided a $50,000 grant to the Hopewell Valley Foundation
to support science education. Bristol-Myers has also provided science
kits used in the Hopewell Elementary School.
Community and Social Progress
Employee volunteering
- BMS employees started volunteering for Hopewell Elementary School's
"Book Buddies" pilot reading program.
- BMS partnered with Hopewell Valley schools to help them expand their
internet capabilities. Hopewell employees from Information Management
volunteered their expertise and a $20,000 grant.
Civic activities supported
BMS sponsored two "Project WET" teacher workshops. Project
WET is a program that facilitates and promotes awareness, appreciation,
knowledge, and stewardship of water resources through the development
and dissemination of classroom-ready teaching aids and through the establishment
of state and internationally sponsored Project WET programs.
- Bristol-Myers Squibb partnered with Hopewell Valley High School, North
Brunswick High School, and Rutgers University as part of FIRST (For
Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST is a national
program that exposes high school students to the world of engineering
by teaming them up with experts from the business and academic sectors.
- For the past 15 years, the company has supported the Minority Access
to the Professions Scholars (MAPS) program at Middlesex County College
in Edison, New Jersey. MAPS provide African-Americans and Hispanic students
with career and educational planning support as well as personal growth
and development through internships and mentoring with corporate sponsors.
- At Princeton University, the company supports the QUEST program to
enhance the science and math teaching skills of elementary school teachers.
QUEST fosters collaboration among members of Princeton University's
science and engineering departments, local schoolteachers, and undergraduates
earning certification to teach in the public schools.
- BMS Hopewell participates in the BLAST (Building Leadership &
Assistance for Science Teaching) Program. This program allows BMS employees
to borrow science books and tapes, assist teachers in classroom science,
and to participate in short courses at Rider University that enable
them to delve into the theory and practice of inquiry, classroom learning,
and "science coaching."
Awards and Recognition
Support to local emergency response organizations
- BMS donated 3 Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to the Pennington
Volunteer Fire Department ($12,000).

Safety Bureau, the Pennington Volunteer Fire Department and the Pennington
First Aid Squad in 2005.
Environmental Performance
- In August 2006, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Hopewell Campus was nominated
by the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association for the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency's first annual Water Efficiency Leaders Award which
recognizes organizations who are providing leadership and innovation
in water efficient practices.
-
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Hopewell Campus received River Friendly
Business Certification from the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association
in July 2006. The River Friendly program tailors goals and requirements
to be completed in the categories of Water Quality Management, Water
Conservation Techniques, Wildlife and Habitat Enhancement, and Education
and Outreach.
-
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Hopewell Campus received certification from
the Wildlife Habitat Council in November 2001. The Wildlife Habitat
Council's Corporate Habitat Certification/International Accreditation
program recognizes commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental
education programs at individual sites. BMS Hopewell applied for program
recertification in July 2006.

- The Hopewell facility has developed a brochure
(1.9 MB PDF) to help raise awareness about Stormwater Management. The
Hopewell Campus watershed consists of agricultural, forest, open field,
wetland, stream, and pond habitats that comprise most of a sub-watershed
of the Stony Brook. Most water from the developed portion of the Hopewell
Campus drains to on-Campus ponds, which periodically drain to the Stony
Brook through an unnamed tributary. We have implemented a watershed
stormwater management plan that provides an integrative approach to
evaluating activities on the Hopewell Campus that may influence water
resources locally and downstream. As part of this approach, we have
optimized water reuse to reduce wastewater discharge, reduced our use
of fertilizers and pesticides, enhanced wetland areas to reduce stormwater
velocity and increase groundwater recharge, and landscaped the Hopewell
Campus to reduce high maintenance and impervious surfaces. As part of
our commitment to the Hopewell Community, we monitor water quality and
quantity in the Stony Brook.
- The Hopewell facility has developed a brochure
(319k PDF) to help raise awareness about local threatened and endangered
species. This brochure also encourages taking steps in order to protect
these species.
- A Watershed Walk and brochure ( Watershed
Walk (529k PDF)), was developed on the campus, which
is a two-mile trail with seven stations highlighting the important features
of the BMS Hopewell Campus Watershed.
- The Hopewell facility, in support of Earthday, developed a Wildlife
Walk (1.3mb PDF), which is the two-mile walk with six stations
describing the natural and developed wildlife habitat at the site.
