endangered species activities

  • The Hopewell facility has developed a brochure (1.9 MB PDF) to help raise awareness about Stormwater Management. The Hopewell Campus watershed consists of agricultural, forest, open field, wetland, stream, and pond habitats that comprise most of a sub-watershed of the Stony Brook. Most water from the developed portion of the Hopewell Campus drains to on-Campus ponds, which periodically drain to the Stony Brook through an unnamed tributary. We have implemented a watershed stormwater management plan that provides an integrative approach to evaluating activities on the Hopewell Campus that may influence water resources locally and downstream. As part of this approach, we have optimized water reuse to reduce wastewater discharge, reduced our use of fertilizers and pesticides, enhanced wetland areas to reduce stormwater velocity and increase groundwater recharge, and landscaped the Hopewell Campus to reduce high maintenance and impervious surfaces. As part of our commitment to the Hopewell Community, we monitor water quality and quantity in the Stony Brook.
  • The Hopewell facility has developed a brochure (319k PDF) to help raise awareness about local threatened and endangered species. This brochure also encourages taking steps in order to protect these species.
  • A Watershed Walk and brochure ( Watershed Walk (529k PDF)), was developed on the campus, which is a two-mile trail with seven stations highlighting the important features of the BMS Hopewell Campus Watershed.
  • The Hopewell facility, in support of Earthday, developed a Wildlife Walk (1.3mb PDF), which is the two-mile walk with six stations describing the natural and developed wildlife habitat at the site.
