Moreton, UK
Facility Information
MORETON, UK
WORLDWIDE MEDICINES
Facts and Figures

- The 11.2 acre Pharmaceutical Research Institute site at Moreton is
located on the Wirral Peninsula between Chester and Liverpool
- Moreton undertakes most activities the government licensing bodies
call "CMC" - chemistry, manufacturing and control activities.
These include investigation of new medicinal compounds to ascertain
best how they can be turned into acceptable (to patients) medicines
that can be conveniently manufactured at commercial scale. They need
to be developed so that they will have a useful shelf-life and can be
expected to provide for reliable and reproducible absorption of the
medicine into the bloodstream after administration. This work requires
the proper integration of disciplines such as pharmaceutics R&D,
analytical R&D (including analytical development, quality control
and stability), clinical supply operations, pharmaceutical development
strategic operations quality assurance, and informatics.

Economic Development
- The facility directly contributes to the local community via
- provision of employment, wages and benefits
- facilitating the use of local suppliers and contractors, including
security, housekeeping, catering and maintenance activities
- capital investment: year on year ongoing capital investment in
new equipment as well as facility refurbishment, extension and new
construction
- contribution through taxes.
Community and Social Progress

- The site is integrated into the local community with outreach programs
established to maintain important links.
-
One example of our outreach program is our link with Nuffield Science
Bursaries. PRI, Moreton employees actively demonstrate commitment
to young people and their science education and by giving them the
opportunity to experience real-life science through the Nuffield Science
Bursary scheme.
-
The Nuffield Foundation charity offers bursaries to first year 'A'
Level/Higher/SYS and Advanced GNVQ/GSVQ students to undertake science
based projects during the school summer holidays. The aim is to give
students who are interested in science a chance to contribute to science
or technology based projects in the areas of research and development
in industry or research institutions. The projects set have clear
scientific or technological content, a defined plan with desired outcome
identified, contribute to the work of the host organisation and allow
scope for initiative on the part of the student. As project providers
we identify and outline a suitable project, provide materials and
resources such as manufacturing and analytical equipment for the study
and provide appropriate training, supervision and direction when necessary.
-
In addition to the Nuffield bursaries, we also offer placements to
pharmacy, chemistry and computing/ informatics undergraduate students.
Also, we support a number of post-graduate research degree programmes
at several UK universities including those in the north west.
-
What do we gain from this apart from demonstrating our commitment
to the Bristol-Myers Squibb pledge? We demonstrate science can provide
exciting and rewarding career opportunities, we spread knowledge of
our company and the work we undertake to our local community and the
next generation of scientists, we provide development opportunities
for our staff through training and mentoring young people and importantly
we get projects completed that contribute to our every day work.
- Together with the other UK BMS North West sites (GDC and
Chester), we support a variety of local charities through the North
West Donations Committee.
Charities who have recently benefited from our support include local
schools and colleges, local community projects, and specific charities
for example hospices, medical condition support groups, and medical
research groups.
-
Moreton facility employees took part in a volunteer action day to
protect the habitat of the natterjack toads, working with rangers
from the North Wirral Coastal Park at the Red Rocks site in Hoylake.
This coastal site is managed by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust as a nature
reserve. The natterjack became locally extinct at this site in 1995,
and the Cheshire Wildlife Trust is continuing to encourage establishment
of the species through habitat management. Our employees built an
additional fence around a pond area, which is one of only a few homes
for natterjack toads within the United Kingdom, then built a dam to
stop the overflow waters being washed down onto the beach where the
spawn would die. With the dam in place, the natural stream now re-routes
into the grassy area inland of the beach where the spawn have more
opportunity to grow and develop into full grown species. The natterjack
is protected through both national and international legislation.
- Employees continue to take part in other monthly action days undertaking
many different projects to help preserve and improve the North Wirral
Coastal Park.
- The Bristol-Myers Squibb sites at Moreton and Chester, UK, were jointly
named winners of the Wirral Investment Network Health and Safety Award
2004 and the Making a Difference Award in 2005, both in the large business
category. The sites were selected to receive these coveted regional
awards from a field of large local businesses operating in the Wirral
and Chester area of North West England. The Wirral Investment Network
is a partnership of both private and public sector organizations and
firms, working together to advance the local health and safety, economic,
environmental, educational, community, and social prospects. Awards
are annually granted to highlight good practices in the field of health
and occupational well being.
Environmental Performance

- Our site has strong EHS management systems, which promote continuous
improvement, employee involvement and management commitment.
- The goal of zero recordable accidents has been achieved for the years
1996 through 2005, this is due in part to our ongoing proactive approach
which includes risk assessments, COSHH assessments, regular departmental
and site audits, inspections, near miss reporting and the site's no
blame culture.
- We continually strive to minimize our impact on the environment. Product
Life Cycle considerations, water and energy reduction, waste minimisation
and opportunities for recycling are just some of the issues which have
been integrated into Moreton EHS Committee and Steering Group meetings.
New teams were set up in 2004 to further investigate opportunities for
reducing energy consumption and minimizing waste production.
- We have just commissioned a project to review the feasibility for
introducing renewable energy sources on site.
- Under an agreement with our energy provider, the energy supplied to
PRI Moreton is currently being supplied from renewable sources.
