Contractor Support

Bristol-Myers Squibb works with contractors and suppliers to ensure the highest level of quality, expertise, experience, and fit with our operating culture. We expect our contractors and suppliers to comply with all legal and regulatory requirements for the workplace, including health and safety, diversity, and human rights.

Contract Employees

Bristol-Myers Squibb uses agencies that provide temporary employees to perform a wide range of services, and our EHS staff is developing guidance that addresses key issues, such as training. EHS personnel also evaluate contracts for maintenance, mailroom, security, cafeteria, and other services to make sure that they cover EHS performance issues. A guideline for developing a contractor safety program is published on the company’s internal EHS website.

Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative

Bristol-Myers Squibb has joined eight other pharmaceutical companies to draft an industry code of conduct for suppliers. The initiative is designed to leverage efficiencies, reduce risk, and implement responsible practices in the pharmaceutical supply chain. The benefits are expected to include increased efficiency by standardizing codes of conduct and implementation schemes; reduced potential liabilities by improving workplace conditions; and reduced risk of business interruption due to substandard social or environmental practices.

The code is expected to be finalized in late 2006. Adoption of the code will be voluntary, and Bristol-Myers Squibb will decide on whether it will adopt the code after the final version is developed.

Contractor Evaluations

Bristol-Myers Squibb may conduct evaluations of a contractor or supplier. Determining whether an evaluation is warranted depends on the extent of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s involvement in the operations of the contractor or supplier, as well as the nature of such operations.

In addition, we have developed an EHS questionnaire that may be sent to most third-party manufacturers and to a contractor or supplier if it falls into one of the following categories:

  • Sole source
  • Manufacturer of a strategic material
  • Manufacturer of a material to Bristol-Myers Squibb’s specifications
  • Referenced in a New Drug Application submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Based on the results of the questionnaire, we may conduct a site evaluation. EHS works closely with sourcing staff to determine the priorities for the site evaluation. The evaluation team will make recommendations and then develop and track an action plan for the contractor. The questionnaire or site visit may be repeated periodically, based on risk.

Bristol-Myers Squibb conducted 6 reviews, including 2 on-site visits, during 2005. In 2006, the number of third-party manufacturer reviews greatly increased. As of October 1, Bristol-Myers Squibb has conducted 25 reviews and 20 on-site visits during 2006.
