Q. Does Bristol-Myers Squibb support any wildlife or habitat preservation organizations? A. We continued to conserve biologically diverse land for preservation in perpetuity. Our 2010 goal is to offset the property used by Bristol-Myers Squibb's total operations worldwide through these conservation efforts while also promoting employee participation in protecting critical land areas. We have met our goal of protecting land equal in area to the amount of land used by our research and development, manufacturing, distribution centers, and administrative offices. We began this initiative in 1998, when we cosponsored the preservation of biologically diverse land on the outskirts of Brazil's Pantanal National Park, under the auspices of the Center for Ecosystem Survival at San Francisco State University. In addition to offsetting property used by Bristol-Myers Squibb's total operations worldwide, we also promote employee participation in protecting critical land areas and encourage local site conservation projects. Our facilities support a number of programs to protect local endangered or threatened species and habitats. We have established a 2010 goal: in countries and U.S. states where our manufacturing, research and development, and distribution sites are located, Bristol-Myers Squibb will sponsor a local endangered or threatened species or will partner with an organization that protects endangered local species and their habitats.[top of page]

Our EHS policy explicitly calls for integration. The policy states that our employees are responsible for integrating EHS considerations into their work activities. Division presidents have the primary responsibility for implementing our EHS policy and management at all levels must take actions to ensure that all employees understand the meaning and the importance of the policy. We foster openness and dialogue with our internal and external stakeholders. Our stakeholders include our employees and retirees; senior management and the Board of Directors; shareholders and investor groups; customers and consumers; suppliers and contractors; neighbors and community leaders; regulators, legislators, and political leaders; nongovernment organizations (NGOs); academia; industry peers; and the media. We work to anticipate and respond to their concerns about the potential EHS impacts of our operations and products. [top of page]
Q. I have heard that Bristol-Myers Squibb still uses animals in the testing of their products. Why are you still employing these practices while many other companies are no longer using animals for product testing? A. Bristol-Myers Squibb is committed to developing non-animal tests, and using them whenever possible. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires the use of animal studies. To ensure the humane treatment of laboratory animals, when their use is appropriate, all Bristol-Myers Squibb laboratory animal facilities in the United States are accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, an unaffiliated review organization. For over a century, Bristol-Myers Squibb and its predecessor companies have been committed to providing safe and effective quality products. This commitment at times requires the responsible care and use of animals for research or testing. It is the policy of the company to insist that its scientists always consider replacing the use of animals by other methods, reducing the number of animals used, and refining procedures to enhance animal welfare. All Bristol-Myers Squibb facilities and programs involved with the care and use of animals are periodically subjected to rigorous inspections by company auditors and, where available, by government inspectors. Any procedures involving the care and use of animals must comply with applicable governmental regulations and Bristol-Myers Squibb Animal Care and Use Guidelines. Animal Care and Use Committees are charged with reviewing and monitoring these procedures at each Bristol-Myers Squibb facility to assure that animals are cared for and treated humanely and appropriately. Bristol-Myers Squibb believes its pursuit of quality humane care and reduced use of animals and the development of alternatives to animal use are moral, scientific and legal necessities. With this commitment to animal welfare, Bristol-Myers Squibb employees are expected to treat all animals used in company facilities in a caring and humane manner. Last updated October 27, 2006 .
