Sustainability Goals and Indicators
|
Welcome to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Sustainability websiteThe guiding principles and values behind our business strategy can be found in the Bristol-Myers Squibb mission—to extend and enhance human life—and in our Pledge to all of our stakeholders: “To act on our belief that the priceless ingredient of every product is the honor and integrity of its maker.” Through the products we make, the causes we support and the values we uphold, we’re helping people live better lives. All of this defines how our company approaches sustainability—doing business in a manner that contributes meaningfully to strong communities, to a healthy environment and to economic prosperity, now and into the future. Bristol-Myers Squibb and indeed the entire pharmaceutical industry face many challenges in meeting the needs of patients, health care providers and society at large. We must intensify our efforts to improve access to medicines and health care in general. We need to encourage innovation, in part by protecting intellectual property. And we must operate efficiently and profitably so we can continue to invest in research and development leading to new and better medicines, while also advancing safety practices and environmental protection. This website reports on Bristol-Myers Squibb’s progress in addressing these key areas. We have a long history of sustainability reporting and have used the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines since their inception. This web-based report meets the content and quality requirements of GRI G3 Application Level B+. We were an early proponent of the pharmaceutical industry’s Partnership for Prescription Assistance, which today links over 475 access programs across the U.S. and already has helped more than 2.4 million people. In addition, through our company’s own access program—one of the oldest and most generous in the industry—we provided more than $418 million in free medicines to more than 570,000 people in 2006, and continue to reach out to hundreds of thousands of patients who need our help. Outside the U.S., Bristol-Myers Squibb assists thousands of people in developing countries with significantly discounted medications for HIV/AIDS. As part of our groundbreaking $150 million SECURE THE FUTURE initiative to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa, we have funded three pediatric AIDS clinics in southern Africa, and are committed to building three additional clinics in Africa and elsewhere in the developing world. We also are funding the first-ever Pediatric AIDS Corps of physicians, who are working in our treatment clinics and in other remote areas of Africa. To help patients and doctors make informed decisions about their medicines, the company is committed to disclosing the results of any completed Bristol-Myers Squibb–sponsored clinical trial, regardless of outcome. In addition, we have agreed to voluntarily forego all direct-to-consumer advertising of our new medications for a period of at least one year following their introduction into the marketplace, so that physicians first can be fully educated about these products. The company is committed to recruiting, retaining and developing top talent with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences. Bristol-Myers Squibb is widely regarded as an employer of choice, earning recognition from the National Association of Female Executives, Working Mother magazine and DiversityBiz.com, among others. We remain focused on reducing waste and energy use, protecting employee health and safety, and minimizing the use of chemicals of concern. The company’s Sustainability 2010 Goals are among the broadest in the industry, and we are on track to meet or exceed them. We’re continuing our efforts to address emerging environmental and safety issues, including pharmaceuticals in the environment and potent product ingredients. Global health care challenges are greater than any one company can resolve on its own. We recognize that we must work together with governments, external organizations, patients, doctors and other stakeholders to develop workable and sustainable solutions. It’s a challenging journey, but ultimately a rewarding one in terms of building a healthier and stronger world for all. Take a closer look at the Sustainability Website to see how committed we are to making a difference in people’s lives – now and well into the future. Last updated August 29, 2007 .
